Yep, that's me, I am the interactionists when it comes to cooperative groups. I truly believe that students must learn to work together and work together on their own questions and problems. I do believe that once the teacher has set the expectations of the task to be accomplished, it is up to the students to take full responsibility and control of their learning and for 4th graders to become independent thinkers as a team.

I use groups all the time for PE. Some activities just need groups. I have had a few students ask if they are following the rules properly or doing the activity correct. I try to tell them to ask their group if they are participating properly and they will answer them. I try to always teach the importance of team work, since it is so valuable for every aspect of life

Cooperative learning activities teach kids so much more than content. Once expectations are set it is time for my students to take control of their learning - I agree wholeheartedly with Tom. It is a great experience for the group when they realize that they can solve their problems and function as a true team.

I think this is a great response because it puts the work, thinking, cooperating, and interacting back on the students. They don't always appreciate this responsibility, but having them think for themselves and work it out as a team can only be a good thing.
