I do agree with this thought - taking away recess for the entire class isn't fair - but, it seems to get immediate cooperative reaction from the class, and is an easy way to gain whole class attention! It is good to be reminded that this method does create negative peer pressure!

I am a firm believer in the value of unstructured play time and physical activity. When my kids are antsy or unfocused they need to go to recess, not get it taken away. I wish I felt like I had time to give them a decent recess(more than the 10 minutes before lunch) every day. When I do take them out, they work so much better afterwards.

It is my belief that special areas are an important building block of a students education. I would not ever consider hold back a class nor an individual student from attending their full requirement in these academic areas. Our 4th grade team implements a FRIDAY REWARD DAY (30 minutes of recess) for student with good behavior and completion of all homework assignments that week. The students who comply with the 4B's and complete all homework assignment receive the reward while the individuals who chose to not comply with expectations must sit in the classroom and write positive reinforcement paragraphs to remind them of their responsibilities as a student of learning.

I agree that students should not be pulled from any special area class. When they come in late they miss the beginning of the instructional time and it is a disruption for the whole class. Thanks to all of that make sure your students are at specials on time.

As a first grade teacher, I agree with Janet about the kids needing to play and be outside getting fresh air! Playing is where kids learn many valuable social skills too. I am totally against "group punishment" because my own children have been punished when they were following the rules and were very confused and sad by the actions of the adult. I don't feel the kids who follow the expectations and are always doing their best, get the rewards as much as they should. It is easy to overlook positive behavior because negative behavior is what draws our attention more, which is sad for those kiddos who deserve the positive recognition!

I agree that PE and recess do help kids with their learning. I have trouble fitting in a morning recess, but try to, especially in nice weather. Group punishment doesn't work. I think we know this.

I certainly agree that recess or physical activity for students should not be withheld. Research has shown that physical activity is a very necessary component of learning. Even just standing up and doing simple stretching exercies will improve learning.

This chapter seems to hit home with many of us! Like Janet stated, I wish our youngsters had more time for recess. I've been trying to build in an extra afternoon recess-- 10 minutes of fresh air a day doesn't seem to cut it! It's easy to get caught up in trying to "teach standards" all day long, and we forget that all kids need a mental break. While it is so easy to do group punishment, we might want to remember that each precious minute of our 10 minute recess counts!

I am also a firm believer that the special areas(P.E., Technology, and the Arts) are so important to the development of the whole child. There needs to be a balance between the physical, intelluctual and creative experiences.
Also, I think we would all agree there is never any benefit to a whole group punishment.

Using whole group punishment not only makes the students feel frustrated, but parents will never side with you on this one. For good reason, too. There are way too many students doing the right thing for the whole class to feel the consequences of those that need help with self control. All students need to get out of the building, get outside, get physical, and burn off some energy. It's healthy for the body and the mind.

I'm with MB on this one. Parents NEVER side with this one...I had learned this the hard way a few years back. Now I just remind them, if they're taking too long getting themselves together, that they are 1 minute or 2 minutes late for recess. That usually gets them them moving in the right direction a little bit faster.
