This is a pet peeve of mine, to the point that I discuss the concept of over generalization with my classes each year. It has become a joke in class when they hear the phrases... always and/or never ... they immediately respond - "over generalization, reword it". Few things in life fit the categories of always and never.
That is so true. I have also discussed this with my students, especially when they are negative about their accomplishments. Life is full of gray areas and I have "never" had a student who would fall into either extreme!
Seems like sweeping generalizations are often the breeding grounds for bigotry, racism and other dehumanizing attitudes. Not the sort of thinking we would want to encourage in our students.
Wow, it is so true about Always and Never. It is so easy for adults to use these words when upset and trying to get their point across to a child. I have heard parents say this during conferences about their child. This should be a life lesson for ALL.
This is an issue that a lot of my students seem to have problems with. I am sure that there are times that I might say the "always or never" phrases, but I do make a conscious effort not to. When my students use one of these phrases, I try to use it as a teaching moment to point out that things are not always something, or never something else. My students tend to use these phrases in a negative manner, usually having to do with their behavior, or something hey want to do. Usually, these are quick ah ha moments.

This should be applied to all areas of our lives not just at school.
