This is a constant issue. The suggested comments made sense. It goes along with the direct communication that is apparent in many of the entries.

I feel like that comment drips with sarcasm, satisfying to the frustrated speaker, but shaming to the recipient. I feel that shaming, especially in public, is counter productive at the very least and quite damaging at the worst.

Even when joking around sarcasm is dangerous. I have been trying very hard to limit the places I use it

I think that if the suggested comments were said in a calm gentle way, I don't believe they would be misconstrued as sarcastic or demeaning.

I have found that whenever you give students a choice and don't back them in a corner, way more often than not, they make the right choice. It's not always easy to say everything exactly the right way when you are juggling 12 things at once in a full, busy, bustling classroom. Giving choices helps avoid the power plays.

Usually the echo clapping or quiet in 3-2-1 works for me. The echo clapping can actually be turned into a short game and they are being redirected and don't even know it. Then you have their attention and you can go on with whatever and you don't have to yell.
